Growing Regions

Scots pine is the most widely distributed pine in the world. It's native range includes Scotland, Scandinavia (excluding Denmark), northern Europe, and northern Asia. It is introduced in many areas in the United States and Canada, and is naturalized in the Northeast and in the Great Lakes states [29,32,42].

     

General Information

The currently accepted scientific name of Scots pine is Pinus sylvestris L. [42]. Scots pine introduced in North America are nearly all the typical variety, Pinus sylvestris var. sylvestris [61].

In Europe and Asia, Scots pine forms a boreal forest type with Norway
spruce (Picea abies).  Scots pine is listed as a dominant species in
